With the aim of strengthening cooperation with bodies working in the health sector, and in line with Syria's commitments to the provisions of the Nairobi Summit on Population and Development, the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, in cooperation with the World Health Organization, held today a consultative workshop on the role of trade unions and professional associations in the health field in achieving the goals of sustainable development. At the Dama Rose Hotel in Damascus.
The workshop axes focused on the context of international population conferences, from the Cairo International Conference on Population and Development 2014, to the Nairobi Population Summit 2019, Syria's commitments to the sustainable development goals and the relevant programs of the World Health Organization and subsequent action steps.
A number of obstetrics and gynecology specialists in the hospitals of the Ministries of Higher Education, Scientific Research, Health, Defense and Interior participated in the workshop, in addition to representatives of the Syrian Obstetrics and Gynecology Association and the Family Planning Association.
The assistant of the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, Elham Safi, stressed the importance of linking the goals of sustainable development and population issues, and the role of health-related authorities to achieve these goals, noting that the commitments approved by the Nairobi conference focus on improving the health aspects of mothers and children to create an environment that keeps pace with its goal of raising the standard of the family in a way general in Syria.
Dr. Wael Ismail, the organization’s reproductive health program official in Damascus, explained that Syria has committed itself to implementing the decisions of the Nairobi conference related to women’s access to family planning methods, reproductive health services, reducing maternal and child mortality rates, reducing early marriage, and combating gender-based violence. Social, pointing out that the organization is working to enhance this through a number of programs aimed at improving the quality of services provided.
Director of Quality at the Family Planning Association, Dr. Mona Farhoud, indicated that the association provides a number of reproductive health services and support for women through centers and clinics affiliated with the association distributed in various regions.
In turn, the Director General of the University Hospital for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Salah Sheikha, pointed out that the hospital is working to provide all the necessary care and follow-up services for pregnant women, in addition to conducting natural and cesarean deliveries and treating various gynecological diseases.
It is noteworthy that the Nairobi International Summit on Population and Development was held in 2019, during which the focus was on empowering women, youth, people with disabilities and displaced families to take their participatory role in development.
