Sukur was one of the biggest football stars in the history of Turkey.
The striker was an integral part of the 2002 Turkish team that won third place in the World Cup and scored 51 goals in 112 appearances.
He starred in Galatasaray with 162 goals in 246 appearances.
However, Shukor's life changed from one end to the other: after joining Recep Tayyip Erdogan's party, he was suspected of corruption cases and as soon as his relationship with the president deteriorated, it was clear to him that he had to flee the country.
All his assets in Turkey were frozen and he fled to the United States when he had to leave behind his father, who was banned and later given up because he had cancer.
Over time, intimidation began when a fan who took a picture with Shukor was also banned for it.
In an interview in Germany, Shukor said that he now works as an Uber driver in Washington and sells books for a living.
