An unusual story of solidarity between villages, life and death... It is a really rare procedure and carried out with mutual aid between the neighboring municipalities of Saint-Chels and Marcilhac-sur-Célé, in the Lot.
To allow the extension of the cemetery of the first village, the second agreed to modify its borders.
The church of Saint-Chels is located on a ridge line, on the border of Marcilhac-sur-Célé, forcing its municipality to extend the cemetery on the current parking lot and to transfer it to nearby land belonging to the neighboring village.
“We had no reason to refuse this change”
If Marcilhac-sur-Célé had refused this change, the only solution would have been to move the cemetery.
The territorial limits of each municipality will thus be shifted by a few hundred meters to carry out this expansion project.
“We had no reason to refuse this request for modification and our two municipalities have always cooperated well since we are in the same canton and the same community of municipalities, assures Jean-Paul Mignat, the mayor of Marcilhac-sur-Célé who has about 200 inhabitants.
This redistricting will allow Saint-Chels to enlarge its cemetery and also to strengthen its town centre.
The two municipal councils of each city have validated this change of borders”.

To legally validate this territorial modification, a public inquiry is launched from December 6 to 20 in Marcilhac and Saint-Chels.
It will then be the turn of the prefect of Lot to validate the procedure, before returning to validation before the municipal councils.
The Lot prefect will make the final decision, which should be made quickly.
