PORTRAIT – Former housekeeper, Aline Le Guluche learned to read at 50. Having become the author of a book in which she retraces her life course, she describes illiteracy as an “intellectual prison”.

I was illiterate for many years

,” confesses Aline in a silky, shy voice.

"

And illiterate does not mean illiterate

, she underlines,

I went to school well but I did not master reading or writing when I left

".

Like her, 2.5 million French people have left school without mastering the basic skills and are now illiterate.

On the occasion of the World Day for Equal Opportunities,

Le Figaro

met the author of

I learned to read at 50

, Aline Le Guluche.

"Dirty peasant girl"

Born in 1961 into a peasant family in Yvelines, Aline is the last of eight siblings.

Very young, she started working on the farm where she helped her parents and took care of the animals.

At 6 years old, the little blond and skinny girl goes to school for the first time.

On the first day of school, once lined up in front of the classroom, she meets the gaze of this teacher who already frightens her.

His first impression will not be denied.
