Fuels: prices at the pump are falling again

2022-12-05T17:21:44.339Z

For diesel, the average price has almost returned to its level before the reduction in rebates per liter in mid-November.

For the second week in a row, the refueling bill fell slightly.

The momentum observed since mid-November, caused in particular by the fall in commodity prices on the markets, has even virtually erased the sharp rise caused by the reduction in rebates per liter from the State and TotalEnergies.

According to data from the Ministry of Energy Transition, Friday, the liter of diesel cost, on average, 1.8202 euro.

An amount down 4.1 cents over seven days, and 8.5 cents compared to mid-November.

The cost of this fuel widely sold in France is thus at its lowest since mid-November and the reduction in discounts, which had led to a price increase of 10.4 cents.

Same observation for gasoline, the cost of which fell over the period.

On Friday, the liter of SP95 was displayed at 1.7336 euro, that of SP95-E10 at 1.6951 euro and that of SP98 at 1.7923 euro.

Amounts certainly high, but down two cents over seven days, and five cents over two weeks.

For gasoline, however, the difference with the price observed before the reduction in rebates remains significant: at the time, for comparison, a liter of SP95 cost 1.6855 euros, or almost five cents less.

The declines observed over the past few weeks can be explained above all by the fall in the price of raw materials.

The barrel of Brent recovered slightly as the entry into force of the embargo on Russian crude approached on Monday, but it rose, in one month, from 98 dollars to around 87 dollars.

However, the price of the raw material represents a third of the final price, all taxes included, for gasoline, and up to 43% for diesel, according to Ufip energies and mobility, which represents professionals in the oil sector.

A significant weight, therefore.

However, developments in the coming weeks are difficult to predict.

On the one hand, the end of fuel discounts, at the beginning of January 2023, will automatically increase the bill.

On the other, bearish factors - such as Covid-19 in China or fears of a global recession - are driving down demand and prices.

Director of the Center for Geopolitics of Energy and Raw Materials at the University of Paris Dauphine, Patrice Geoffron thus underlines in

a “

concern in terms of price instability

”.

The government promises to act, however, by helping the French people forced to take their car to go to work as a priority.
