The AWISTA-Starnberg company gives tips on how to handle the bio bin in winter - so that the waste can also be removed.

District – The municipal company AWISTA-Starnberg appeals to the citizens of the district of Starnberg to take a few things into account when using the bio bin in winter.

“In winter it happens again and again that organic waste freezes solid in the organic waste bin.

This can mean that some bins can only be emptied partially or not at all.

If this is the case with an organic waste bin because the organic waste is frozen solid or has jammed, there is no entitlement to subsequent emptying, explains AWISTA and gives these tips:

  • Do not put any liquid or too wet waste in the compost bin.

Dry organic waste that is too damp or wet beforehand, allow it to drip off or pack it in compostable paper bags or kitchen paper.

Damp leaves tend to freeze solid, so before emptying, carefully loosen the leaves from the sides of the organic waste bin with the help of spades or sticks.

  • Before filling the compost bin, cover the floor with shrubs, branches or similar airy materials.

This can significantly reduce the risk of freezing to the ground.

  • If possible, the organic waste bin should not be placed in a place that is particularly exposed to the cold before it is emptied.

A location on a house wall or in a garage can help a lot.

  • If the contents are already frozen, they can be loosened with a long stick or spade or loosened from the edge of the barrel.

But be careful: In the event of frost, the plastic in the bin becomes brittle and more susceptible to damage.

In general, AWISTA asks that no plastic be thrown into the organic waste bin, including compostable plastic bags.

"What belongs in the organic waste bin is shown in the separation list from the guideline 'Dispose of organic waste correctly', which is published by AWISTA-Starnberg and is available at all 17 recycling depots or in the office, Moosstraße 5, 82319 Starnberg." Information is also available at www .awista-starnberg.de/biowaste.
