Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that the West's plans to contain Russia pose a serious threat and could lead to a direct clash with dire consequences.
Sputnik quoted Lavrov as saying during his participation in the Moscow conference to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons: In the context of the West's efforts to contain Russia, the line of the United States and NATO as a whole for an actual military confrontation with us poses a serious threat, and it is clear that this is fraught with a direct clash between the nuclear powers with dire consequences.
Lavrov continued: We are forced to regularly send our own warning signs in this regard, but instead of taking them seriously, they are maliciously distorted in the West, and they accuse us of using threatening rhetoric.
Lavrov expressed regret that the strategic dialogue between Russia and the United States, which possess the largest nuclear arsenals, and bear a special responsibility for maintaining international peace and security, is being put by Washington in a frozen state, noting that the last tangible result of joint efforts in this field is the agreement to extend the START treaty. for five years.
The Russian Foreign Minister said: In the absence of negotiating action to maintain strategic stability, existing problems will accumulate, and this is fraught with avalanche-like risks.
