Migrants caught in limbo between the United States and Mexico have become easy prey for organized crime, which has launched a wave of attacks, threats and extortion against border shelters.
On November 29, one of the main shelters in Tijuana, Embajada Migrante, was forced to close due to extortion.
For four months, the administration and migrants were targeted by criminals who demanded hundreds of dollars for allowing them to cross the border.
Another refugee center on the banks of the Rio Grande recently suffered a kidnapping attempt.
Added to the frequent threats is the saturation that these centers are going through, due to the recent eviction of an informal camp dubbed 'little Venezuela'.
The inhabitants of this settlement have now dispersed throughout Ciudad Juárez, increasing their level of risk.
