The celebration of International Volunteer Day, which falls on December 5, aims to introduce volunteer work, its achievements and its developmental role in society, to honor the efforts of volunteers, to consolidate the concept of volunteering, and to educate people about it and its importance in the work of civil institutions and associations.

The United Nations chose “Together We Work Now” as the slogan for this year’s celebration of volunteering, to strengthen its advocacy and recognize the valuable contribution of volunteers all over the world, as social participation and volunteer work help societies reduce the burdens they face.

In Syria, a group of volunteer teams, initiatives and civil associations were able to translate volunteer work into social and family programs, which included different segments and age groups, and mitigated the effects of the terrorist war that the country was exposed to, in addition to facing the conditions and the Western economic blockade on it.

The positive effects of voluntary work are not limited to society and the beneficiaries of its activities, but rather extend to the volunteers themselves, according to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Human Resources Management Corporation, Dr. Munir Abbas, who has been working in the field of voluntary work and social responsibility for nearly 20 years, indicating that during his experience in volunteer work he provided thousands of training hours. To build the capabilities of young people and develop their skills, and to guide and qualify job seekers and secure job opportunities for them, pointing out that the concept of volunteering is a way of life, a lofty goal, and real work, not a luxury when time is available, as some think.

After 6 years of his work in volunteer work, journalist Ammar Al-Bari considered that his work in this field is a journey of learning and gives values, principles and information to be used for the benefit of society, as he began volunteering in 2016 with the Family Planning Association in the field of stimulating learning through sessions to help families affected by The terrorist war on Syria, and to raise awareness of issues of concern to young people.

Al-Bari also worked in field trips to help people affected by the terrorist war and provide them with psychological support, in addition to volunteering with a Syrian medical team to support people with the Corona virus and raise awareness of the disease through social media, and he participated in volunteer work to support people with disabilities in 2017 and indicated that his graduation project from The Faculty of Information was titled “Volunteering is You” and included the experience of 29 people from Syria and the homeland, who talked about their volunteer work and the added value of their experience and its impact on their societies.

In turn, young Hanin Shaddoud said that her volunteering within the communication teams of the Syrian Trust for Development contributed to enhancing her skills and developing her personality, explaining that she participated in a number of activities to introduce university specializations and community support, and her volunteering experience formed the feeling that there is a useful work that can be offered to the people around her.

It is noteworthy that since 1985, the United Nations has designated December 5 as International Volunteer Day, or what is known as International Volunteer Day.
