English soccer star Raheem Sterling returned home from the World Cup in Qatar after armed intruders broke into his home while his family was inside, a person with knowledge of the situation told CNN.

The incident occurred on Saturday night, the person told CNN, and Sterling is said to be "shaken" and "concerned" for the well-being of his children after the break-in.

There would be an opportunity for Sterling to return to Qatar if the circumstances are right, the individual told CNN, but added that "right now he is focused on being home and supporting his family."

England will face France in the quarterfinals of the World Cup on Saturday, November 10.

In a statement sent to CNN, Surrey Police said they are currently investigating a report of a burglary at an address in Oxshott, Leatherhead.

"Police were contacted just before 9pm on Saturday, December 3 after the occupants of the property arrived home to discover that various items, including jewelry and watches, had been stolen from them," a spokesperson for the police said. Surrey Police to CNN.

"Investigations to establish the circumstances are ongoing and the investigation is ongoing. There was no threat of violence as the items were later discovered stolen. Investigations into the circumstances are ongoing."

Sterling was absent from England's 3-0 win over Senegal on Sunday and England coach Gareth Southgate later said the 27-year-old was dealing with a "family matter".

"You have days where events happen and you have to deal with them. He's on his way home. Obviously, we're mindful of respecting his space and privacy, so we don't want to go into too much detail."

The Chelsea striker played in England's first two matches in the World Cup group stage, scoring in the team's 6-2 win against Iran.
