Herbert Summa (79) from Zolling has been involved in the FT “People in Need” campaign for many years.

The pensioner explains what motivates him to do this.

Zolling

– Despite inflation and the energy crisis, the “People in Need” fundraising campaign got off to a good start.

But who are these people who donate to the needy in the district every year?

They are people like Herbert Summa from Zolling.

He has supported the FT fundraiser for many years.

For the 79-year-old, social commitment is simply part of it.

"If the campaign didn't exist, it would have to be invented," says Summa.

"For me it is important that the money goes directly to the people who need it without any administrative effort."

Whenever he is at the bank, he makes a donation

The Zollinger donates regularly.

"Whenever I have something to do at the savings bank, I also make a transfer to account 190." And that's often the case, he says.

Sometimes it is ten euros, sometimes 20, sometimes even 30 euros.

This is a matter of honor for the retired computer technician.

"I'll manage well with my pension." His attitude is why shouldn't we also think about those who aren't doing so well at the moment.

How to help “people in need”

The Freisinger Tagblatt and the association "People in Need" help needy fellow citizens:

He personally got to know a few people with little financial leeway when he got into a deep crisis in his life for family reasons many years ago.

"I joined a self-help group at Caritas, Summa remembers.

"There were a lot of single parents there who just couldn't make ends meet." What he particularly appreciates about the FT campaign is that it reports on the fate of individuals.

"Perhaps this will give some people something to think about after all."

Summa is volunteer work itself

Social competence is particularly important for the Zollinger.

For many years he was involved in the seniors' group in the parish.

In the Zollinger parish home, the older generation came together to drink coffee together or just to chat.

The gleam in the seniors' eyes always pleased him.

Herbert Summa is also active with the Zolling Neighborhood Aid to drive less mobile people to the doctor.

"That's just part of it for me." And you get a lot in return.

The gratitude of those who have been able to help is nice.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

In the future, Herbert Summa has decided not only to donate at Christmas time.

"If there's anything left over from my household money, which I divide up every week, then I'll put it aside," says the senior with a wink.

"Whoever invented the "People in Need" campaign should actually be awarded the Nobel Prize," says Zollinger.
