"He took her in a taxi": what is known about the young pregnant woman in Mexico murdered to steal her baby

2022-12-06T02:39:09.577Z

The case of Rosa Isela Castro is part of a strange phenomenon known as the kidnapping of a newborn by cesarean section. Remember the tragedy that Marlen Ochoa suffered in Chicago, whose baby was also ripped from her womb by a woman who offered free clothes on the internet.

The murder in Mexico of a young woman who was 9 months pregnant to rip out the baby she was carrying has caused outrage in the country and the demand for justice by the victim's relatives.

Rosa Isela Castro Vázquez, 20, was reported missing on November 30, after going on an appointment with a woman who offered her free clothes online.

Her body was found Saturday without the baby she was carrying inside her.

A couple, Gonzalo 'N' and Verónica 'N', were arrested in connection with the femicide and the authorities recovered a newborn safe and sound, who was already claimed by the victim's relatives, according to the authorities.

Recordings from a security camera show the moment in which Castro Vázquez meets with his alleged assassins.

After waiting alone for a while, the supposed clothes giver appears and approaches her.

She looks both ways and takes the young woman by the waist to a vehicle.

It is unclear if she is threatening her verbally or physically.

"They hooked her through messages on social networks that they were going to donate clothes to her," a sister-in-law of the victim told Noticias Telemundo, who asked to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals.

"She was picked up by a woman, she took her in a taxi, that's what we know," she added.

Some relatives demonstrated over the weekend together with defenders of women's rights in front of the city hall of the Port of Veracruz to demand justice and an end to the disappearances and femicides that plague the state.

Cases of women who stole babies from their mothers' wombs

Castro's case is reminiscent of other thefts of a baby in its mother's womb in Mexico and the United States that have been shocked by its cruelty.

According to experts, this is a rare phenomenon that is a more extreme variant of baby theft, and although only 9 cases have been documented in the United States since 1987, they have already given this pathology a clinical name: newborn kidnapping by Caesarean section.

The goal of the macabre surgery is to fulfill a kind of twisted fantasy of actually giving birth, which can become a psychotic obsession for some women in very rare cases, according to psychiatry experts consulted by The Associated Press news agency.

The victims almost always die and the attackers claim their children as their own, regardless of whether they are stillborn or alive.

One of the most notorious recent cases was that of the young Marlen Ochoa López, who was murdered on April 23, 2019 in Chicago, Illinois.

The 19-year-old was 9 months pregnant when she was tricked by a woman she met online into offering her free clothes for her future baby.

The victim's child, Yovani López Jr., died weeks later from brain damage.

46, her daughter Desiree Figueroa, 24, and her boyfriend, Piotr Bobak, were charged with Ochoa's murder.

According to the Prosecutor's Office, the women opened the victim's abdomen with a knife while one of them distracted her with a photo album.

In Mexico, in 2018, Jenny Judith, a 9-month-old pregnant woman, disappeared in a similar way after going to collect items that were offered to her for free online, also in the state of Veracruz.

A nurse allegedly helped the killer perform a C-section to remove the baby from her, who was recovered by the family after her.

In 2004, a Kansas woman drove to Missouri to strangle a pregnant woman with rope, then remove her baby from her with a kitchen knife.

In 1987, in New Mexico, a married woman kidnapped a pregnant woman leaving an antenatal clinic, forced her into a car with a fake gun, strangled her, and delivered the baby with a set of car keys.

She was sent to prison for at least 30 years when she was found guilty but mentally ill.
