The Accident Commission wants to counter the serious accidents on Kesselberg with a new measure.

That was announced on Tuesday evening.

Kochel am See – It was agreed that motorcyclists would be closed every day: from April 1st to October 31st, the Kesselberg will be closed to motorcyclists riding uphill every day from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Together, the accident commission - that is the traffic authority in the district office, the police and the state building authority Weilheim - recently analyzed the situation and decided to adapt the existing regulations.

Thomas Holz, Mayor of the municipality of Kochel am See, was also involved.

"30 accidents a year, some of them very serious, are 30 accidents too many and that's why something urgently needs to be done on Kesselberg," he is quoted as saying in the press release.

Most accidents are between 3pm and 10pm

Because the analyzes showed that most accidents occur between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., the closure times are adjusted to the actual accident occurrence.

In future, these times will also apply to Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

The structural measures to reduce the number of accidents and the severity of accidents have been exhausted, the existing central guiding elements remain in place.

91 percent of serious accidents were caused by motorcyclists

"The temporary daily closure of the federal road for motorcyclists for six months is also proportionate from the point of view of the accident commission," Georg Fischhaber, head of the traffic authority in the district office, is quoted as saying.

"Of course, many motorcyclists behave sensibly on the road, but it is also a fact that 78 percent of accidents involving motorcycles happened between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.." 91 percent of serious accidents were caused by motorcyclists.

"From our point of view, you can't and shouldn't watch it any longer," says Fischhaber.

Trial period is valid until October 2024

The district office is now drafting the order, which will then take effect from April 1, 2023.

It will initially apply until October 31, 2024, according to the announcement.

In this trial period, the effects on the accident occurrence are to be determined and analyzed in particular.
