The Department of Homeland Security will extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian citizens in the US for an additional 18 months, due to conditions in the country, it announced. the entity.
Additionally, it will redesignate status for those who were previously ineligible.
The measure, which represents humanitarian aid, applies to people who would face extreme hardship if forced to return to their countries devastated by armed conflict or natural disasters.
Therefore, this protection is limited to people already in the United States.
The Secretary of National Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, has the discretion to designate a beneficiary country of TPS.

Mayorkas also allowed Haitian citizens residing in the United States since November 6 to apply for protections until August 3, 2024, as long as they meet the eligibility requirements.
“We are providing much-needed humanitarian aid to Haitian citizens already in the United States,” Mayorkas said in a statement.
"Conditions in Haiti, including socioeconomic challenges, political instability, and gang violence and crime, compounded by environmental disaster, compelled the humanitarian aid we are providing today."
The extension will run from February 4, 2023 to August 3, 2024.
