Many works of art can be seen in Erdinger Stadtpark.

The participants of a walk with the 3rd Mayor Harry Seeholzer found out who created them and what they mean.

Erding – The advent calendar “Auf Weihnachtn zua”, offered by the Catholic Educational Institute, offers a half-hour break from the pre-Christmas stress every day.

In the series of events, Erding's 3rd Mayor Harry Seeholzer took a small group of weatherproof participants on a walk to the works of art in the city park.

As a consultant for the leisure facilities, Seeholzer was able to contribute many ideas when redesigning the park and has since considered it "my city park", as he explained with a grin.

The Stadtpark was founded by Walter Freiherr von Grainger, who married Franziska von Widnmann from Erding in 1822.

The couple lived in the Heilig Blut castle estate.

Von Grainger died childless in 1875, his widow sold the property and park to the town of Erding, which extended it beyond the Sempt.

The facility was first designated as a city park in 1888 and opened to the public.

A granite obelisk, which the city had erected in 1881 at the park entrance near the Way of the Cross, commemorates the founder.

Not far from the Grainger memorial you can admire a fairytale-like sandstone sculpture.

The Erdinger artist Benno Hauber was inspired by a seal stamp of the city and created the figure, which consists of a heron and a Tatzlwurm.

For many years it stood in a shallow fountain basin in front of the barber shop on the beautiful tower, but eventually broke into several pieces due to the constant contact with water and frost.

Seeholzer, known as Harry S. as an artist, is a big fan of Hauber.

So he had the damaged sculpture restored at his own expense.

However, since traffic safety could not be guaranteed, the work of art was placed in the water.

The Datzlwurm with herons stands on a concrete pipe three centimeters above the water surface.

"I am very pleased that Hauber's work of art has found such a wonderful place in the park," said Seeholzer with satisfaction.

The sculpture "Balance" by Georg Brinkies, which was created at a wood sculpture symposium in 2017, leads a rather shadowy existence.

Here, geometric bodies try to keep their balance.

Protected from visitors' attempts to climb, the oak sculpture stands on the island in the duck pond.

The donkey Max, a bronze figure by Thorsten Mühlbach, stands a few meters away and receives considerably more attention.

Title: "The Donkey and the Rooks".

The resemblance to a stuffed animal is wanted, caused by the surface structure and the coarse seams.

The donkey is especially hugged by young park visitors and used as a photo motif.

The life-size rooks at the donkey's side indicate the huge population of birds - according to Seeholzer there are now 3000 - in the city park.

The same name as Mayor Max Gotz is purely coincidental, explained his deputy.

Rather, the sculpture refers to the park donkey Max, who lived in the enclosure with the fallow deer for many years.

After the enclosure was closed, the donkey was housed in a sanctuary.

In the 1880s, the painter and academy professor Wilhelm von Diez was a frequent visitor to the Stadtpark, teaching his students in the open air.

The enthusiastic angler also found suitable places on the Sempt to pursue his hobby.

Today a massive monument commemorates him.

It was designed by his student Johann Becker-Gundahl.

When the city park was redesigned in 2012, it was slightly relocated.

Harry S.'s "Blue Nest", which the city bought in 2014, can be seen from afar.

"It symbolizes the Bavarian homeland," says Seeholzer.

The facets, which are supposed to reflect the national colors in the sunlight, stand for the diversity of Bavaria.

For decades, artists have used the Wall at the Heilig Blut secondary school for girls.

In addition to a large-scale street art work by Mr. Woodland alias Daniel Westermeier from Walpertskirchen, all kinds of graffiti can be found.

From there the path leads to the 11.50 meter high "lighthouse", a symbol of hope and orientation, which Seeholzer thinks is also a good meeting point.

The work of art by Gerhard Freising from Trier, with its triangular basic shape, takes up the shape of the square and consists of a steel frame with satin-finished Plexiglas panels whose edges are fluorescent.

It is a popular photo motif day and night.
