2022-12-06T04:57:05.940Z

The reason: savings of hundreds of millions of shekels created by the "Zuzu" application, which resulted in the IDF paying only for the actual trips • Next week: the concession that allows reservists to travel by public transportation is expected to end

Starting next Thursday, IDF soldiers will for the first time be able to travel on public transportation for free in civilian clothes, all days of the week - this is what Israel Hayom learned.

The Technology and Logistics Division of the IDF explains that the main reason for making the decision is the financial savings created by the Zuzu application. According to estimates, the use of the application saved the army about NIS 300 million. The army admits that the application does suffer from significant birth defects, but its use caused That instead of paying globally for soldier travel, the IDF pays for the actual amount of travel by the soldiers, and this caused a significant reduction in the army's expenses for soldier travel.

The IDF emphasizes that traveling on civilian vehicles will be allowed only for the private needs of the soldiers, and when traveling to and from an army unit, the soldiers will of course be required to wear uniforms. "Zuzu" will be launched already in the first quarter of 2023, and it should work much better on smartphones.

"Reservists will not be harmed"

In the meantime, as part of a 2018 tender by the IDF and the Ministry of Defense, candidates for mandatory service (Malshabiim) and reservists are currently making trips through a franchisee that won the tender.

The contract for the tender was extended as much as possible, but it should end on December 14.

As of now, no solution has been found to the issue, and if the tender is not extended in time - members of the Security Forces and reservists will be required to pay from their own money for the trips to and from army units.

An IDF spokesperson stated in response: "The IDF is currently in the midst of processing the renewal of the tender contract, and it will be completed by the target date so that the IDF and reservists will not be harmed."
