A group of residents of Nantes airport, which every month identifies flights that do not respect the curfew, pleads for a stricter moratorium. For its part, the DGAC evokes a “clear improvement” in the situation in recent weeks.

The accounts are kept in a precise manner and vigilance is essential.

Since April 8, the date of the establishment of a curfew at Nantes-Atlantique airport, a group of residents has been closely scrutinizing the activity above their heads.

No device is supposed, except in the event of a health, humanitarian, military or governmental emergency, to take off or land from the Nantes runway between midnight and six o'clock in the morning in order to preserve the tranquility of the inhabitants of the sector.

In theory, because the reality is different.

“This measure is not at all satisfactory.

The order taken is much too permissive”

, regrets Paolo Ferreira, the president of the collective of citizens exposed to air traffic at Nantes-Atlantique airport (Coceta).

He bases his speech on statistics listing the number of flights that have not complied with the rule in force.

They are carried out by his organization

“using a technical system”

which makes it possible

“to capture approximately 80% of air traffic”

and are made public each month.

Summary of flights that broke the curfew at Nantes-Atlantique airport, according to Coceta, between April and October 2022. Coceta Twitter account

It is clear that the counter got carried away this summer: 43 flights not respecting the curfew in July then 63 in August.

Since then, the trend has been downward with 35 violations in September and 19 in October.

“It is true that there has been a reduction in traffic at night lately, but it is linked to the pressure put on by the prefecture.

She wants to demonstrate that the measure works.

It's a story of communication and cosmetics

, ”he believes.

For him, at the slightest relaxation of state services, the situation will worsen again.

battle of numbers

"We make fun of the world by wanting to believe that this solution can be sustainable,"

he condemns.

Especially since, according to Coceta, the establishment of the curfew has generated

"side effects"

: the increase in air traffic just before and after its activation (i.e. between 11 p.m.-midnight and 6 a.m.-7 a.m.) then over the weekend.

“Before, it was quieter.

From now on, these two days have become like the others

, ”says Paolo Ferreira.

His organization is not the only one to closely watch over the Nantes sky since the entry into force of the curfew.

The General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) does the same.

On October 19, she also made a first “point” on this subject.

As for the time slot between midnight and six o'clock in the morning, it indicates in the introduction that

"at the end of September 2022, the number of flights over this time slot was divided by six compared to 2018"

.

, she indicated that

"in recent weeks, a marked improvement in compliance with the curfew has been observed with 0.6 deviations per night in October and 0.1 at this stage in November" and that only "two deviations have were recorded in the month of November"

.

“It is normal since they grant a tolerance of five minutes around the time slot of the curfew

, indignant Paolo Ferreira.

This sentence is unacceptable.

What about penalties

Above all, his organization would like

“transparency”

on the financial amounts requested from airlines following the offenses committed.

“For the moment, we don't have them

,” he specifies, knowing that the fine can be up to €40,000 for any breach.

“Since the implementation of the curfew, the DGAC has called several companies to order and the latter have taken measures to improve compliance with it, which seem to be bearing fruit.

The DGAC continues to quickly examine the minutes and the analysis of the discrepancies observed

, ”she specifies in Figaro.

In its report last October, the authority drew up a quantified assessment of the last six months: 203 discrepancies noted, 189 reports drawn up and 69 files sent to the Airport Nuisance Control Authority (ACNUSA).

A “nap” in the airport hall

Faced with a curfew deemed too lax, residents of the airport are not content to count planes outside of schedules.

From time to time, they also organize significant actions.

On November 13, about 80 people dressed in pajamas took over the site lobby to take a “nap” there as a condemnation of air traffic nuisances.

They pleaded for an extension of the curfew.

A position shared by Coceta.

“We want a moratorium preventing flights between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

This request is linked to the recommendations of the WHO

(World Health Organization, editor's note)

which recommends sleeping 8 hours a night

, ”defends Paolo Ferreira.

He also wants this principle of curfew to be

“better adapted”

according to weekdays and weekends.

Without this, it is difficult for him to sleep soundly.
