Paracetamol: why Doliprane for children is sold out in pharmacies

2022-12-06T16:57:48.049Z

Difficult to find alternatives for young children because several syrups are missing from the shelves of pharmacies.

The rupture of this small pink bottle, intended for children, causes some concern on the side of the parents.

Indeed, Doliprane 2.4% has been experiencing a "

supply tension

" for more than a week, specifies Pierre-Olivier Variot, president of the Union of Dispensary Pharmacists' Unions (USPO).

"

I've been waiting for the delivery

" of several boxes for twelve days, adds the pharmacist from Dijon.

For Sanofi, "

there is no shortage of paracetamol-based products

", but "

tensions linked to overconsumption

" by the French, which has increased "

recently due to ongoing epidemics (flu, bronchiolitis and Covid-19).

For Pierre-Olivier Variot, these tensions also come from the social movement launched by the employees of the pharmaceutical group, who are demanding a general increase in wages.

2000 drug references under tension

"

Today, our main job is to look for drugs to supply our patients

," exasperated the pharmacist.

In all, 2000 drug references would be under tension, including amoxicillin, an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections.

For its part, Sanofi defends itself by indicating that "

all forms of the Doliprane range remain open to order to supply and deliver to all our stakeholders

".

In order to limit the shortages of Doliprane, which have lasted for several months, the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) has implemented a “

quantitative quota since July

”.

In the absence of a medical prescription, pharmacists must only dispense a maximum of two boxes per patient.

Prescribers, for their part, must “

prefer a dosage of three doses per day every 8 hours (instead of four doses per day every 6 hours), when the situation allows

it ”.

If alternatives exist for the parents, it is more complicated to find some for the children.

"

There is no more liquid Doliprane, nor Dafalgan or Efferalgan syrups

", notes Christine, preparer in a pharmacy in the Alpes-Maritimes, who advises to contact your pharmacist to find a solution.
