The Association of Mayors of France castigates a “notice period” which “will not allow precise communication with the inhabitants”.

The power cuts likely to occur this winter could have significant consequences, such as depriving hospitals of water, alerted the Association of Mayors of France (AMF) on Tuesday, which asks the government to warn elected officials at 12 p.m. day before and not 5 p.m.

“The notice period the day before at 5 p.m.

(at best)

currently planned will not allow for precise and adapted communication with the inhabitants and our agents”

, assure the mayors in a press release.

"An alert at 12 p.m. would be compatible with a minimum service objective, in particular for the school canteen that the State is asking the municipalities to maintain at the same time"

, continues the association.

More serious, according to the mayors, power cuts threaten the activity of water treatment and sanitation sites,

“with major consequences for the inhabitants: hospitals without water, unusable fire hydrants, pollution of the sea and rivers by sewage

”.

The AMF therefore calls for water treatment and sanitation sites to be classified

as “priority sites”.

Regarding the continuity of school education in primary and nursery schools, the mayors recall that the cuts

"will mechanically lead to the shutdown of alarm and fire-fighting systems, heating, computer servers, anti- intrusion, elevators, and sometimes the water supply"

, requiring a number of precautions when the establishments reopen.

The AMF also calls for the integration of crèches in the list of priority sites.

In a separate press release, the Intermunicipal Association of France also warned on Tuesday of the possibility

of “disorders on the water and sanitation networks, which could in particular lead to the discharge of polluted water into nature

”.
