Hikers and nature lovers will be happy: With the now completed information stand at the starting point of the moor nature trail in Prem, you can immerse yourself in the history of this area.

Prem

- In the summer in Prem, the first thing to do was to build the wooden shelter at the moorland trail parking lot.

Now information boards there also provide information about things worth knowing about the natural circular route.

The shelter with seating cost around 10,000 euros, which, according to the idea of Mayor Andreas Echtler and former tourism board member Udo Ernst, is intended to make the moor nature trail at the entrance to the town even more visible.

The small project funding from Auerbergland, which, according to Echtler, is a good tool to implement such things, supported the measure with 80 percent (8000 euros).

Everything has remained natural

The moor nature trail in Prem is a popular destination for hikers and cyclists all year round, and its parking lot at the entrance to the town is now even more eye-catching.

"The starting point at the mud bath is now even more attractive with the new information stand," says Echtler happily.

The special feature of the 6.5-kilometer circular route, which also leads through the Premer Königsfilz: Nothing has been changed, everything has remained natural.

The tourism association has only set up a hammock at the entrance to the Filz.

A total of 13 display boards explain the characteristics to nature lovers.

The mud bath, the second station on the nature trail, was a heavily frequented bathing establishment with a diving board and water slide for around four decades, most recently in 1975.

Many locals, but also children from the neighboring villages, learned to swim there.

At the end of the 1960s there was even a swimming competition for the fifth to eighth school classes in the old district.

"Today, the mud bath is dammed up from May to October and is then a habitat for many fish and crayfish," it says.

The mud bath got its name from the damming of the humus-rich Röthenbach water.

The fourth display board forms the entrance to the Premer Königsfilz, which covers a total of 74 hectares and was formed after the last ice age around 15,000 years ago.

The mystical figure "Huidingerle" not only accompanies the hikers on the display boards, but can also be discovered as a plastic figure in the middle of the felt.

The legend of the "Huidingerle"

In an old legend it is said of the Premer felt that you were not allowed to look around on the way to the peat cutting, because: "If you looked around anyway, a horrible giant, the 'Huidingerle', climbed out of the swamp, grabbed man and vehicle and pulled her down.

Because women are known to be particularly plagued by curiosity, no male image used to tolerate a female being accompanying him to work in the felt.”

From 1834 to 1984 the core of the moor was used for peat extraction.

Shortly after the Second World War, the largest reduction in volume (6370 cubic meters) was recorded due to the large number of displaced persons.

At that time, a family needed about 15,000 to 20,000 "Wäsen" for heating and cooking.

It should be placed under conservation

Many weeks of hard physical labor passed in the spring and summer before these quantities were cut, stacked and brought in.

The 120 peat huts that served as storage belonged to families from Prem, Steingaden and Lechbruck.

From 1985, peat cutting was banned for nature conservation reasons.

Landscape worth protecting

"In order to be able to preserve the moor at least in its current state, it should be placed under nature protection," said a letter from the Bavarian Forestry Office in Schongau in 1984.

In addition, the 120 huts had to be demolished.

The original tools can still be seen in a small hut, which also serves as a resting place for hikers.

Today, visitors can immerse themselves in a landscape worthy of protection along the moor nature trail.

There are lichens, dead wood, peat moss cushions, numerous berries (such as bog berries and bog berries), carnivorous plants (sundew) and a Nagelfluh hump (an elevation of conglomerate rock) to be discovered.

In addition, there are many animals and plants in a relatively small area, including countless endangered species on the Red List.

There are also occasional special tours that give an insight into the extraordinarily valuable wetland.
