Region – The hospital referendum in Weilheim-Schongau ended with a clear vote.

The initiators rejoice, the district office is shocked.

The referendum in the Weilheim-Schongau district on Sunday (December 4) was a clear one: A clear majority voted against a central hospital and therefore for the continued operation of the two municipal clinics.

There were a whopping 67.2 percent yes votes for the question "Are you in favor of no central hospital being built, but rather that the two hospitals in Schongau and Weilheim be operated in the long term, with the guarantee of basic and standard care at least level 1 and one Emergency care 7 days a week and 24 hours a day, and that the maternity ward at the Schongau location will continue to operate?” There were 32.8 percent no votes.

The result online

The result of the referendum, broken down by the individual municipalities, is available at www.weilheim-schongau.de.

Voter turnout at 48.21 percent

108,517 eligible voters were called in the first district-wide referendum, and according to the district office, turnout was 48.21 percent.

According to the regulatory office, only 36.3 percent cast their votes in Penzberg - there is a local hospital here with the Starnberg clinics.

80.9 percent voted "yes" in Penzberg.

Joy at action alliance

The decision was initiated by the "Action Alliance Pro Hospital Schongau".

It rejects the new construction of a central hospital favored by the district council and the hospital GmbH – Weilheim and Peißenberg are hoping.

The initiative wants to keep both clinics in Schongau and Weilheim.

The alliance is accordingly satisfied.

That things went so clearly was a surprise and a great pleasure, said spokeswoman Daniela Puzzovio, also the second mayor in Schongau.

She hoped for 25,000 valid votes - with more than 52,000 one thing is certain: "You can no longer argue that away." The fact that the East actively participated indicates that the importance of the hospital's future is perceived throughout the district.

"Really great," Puzzovio comments on the Penzberg result.

District Administrator with "great concern"

District Administrator Andrea Jochner-Weiss (CSU) was "very shocked", as she told the Rundschau on Monday (December 5).

She had vehemently campaigned for a "no" with the hospital GmbH.

The district administrator announced after the supervisory board meeting of the GmbH that the grassroots democratic result and the wishes of the voters were respected.

"Nevertheless, the result is a great disappointment for us and makes us very concerned about sustainable, safe healthcare in the district." .

Warning of further problems

The aim is also to “orientate hospital care in the district to be future-proof”, the GmbH reports.

"But that will be a very difficult task and a great challenge," said the district administrator.

Jochner-Weiß warned: "The vote may give the impression that the hospital sites in Weilheim and Schongau can now be preserved in a future-proof manner." However, increasing quality requirements and staff shortages would be solved just as little as the financial challenges.

The referendum is valid for twelve months.

The district administrator had announced that in the event of a defeat after a year, she would want to get back into hospital planning.
