The people of Iran are rebelling against the regime – and those in power are reacting harshly: the Revolutionary Guards have now arrested twelve alleged members of a group with ties to Europe who are accused of planning acts of sabotage.

Those arrested were "under the leadership of counter-revolutionary actors from Germany and the Netherlands" and carried out "activities against national security".

This was reported by the pro-government news agency Tasnim.

She referred to a statement by the Revolutionary Guards in the central Iranian province of Markasi.

Accordingly, the group is said to have tried to obtain weapons for "subversive acts".

Referring to the nationwide protests, the statement said that "Project Unrest has failed."

The actions against the regime, which apparently fears an overthrow, have been going on for months.

The trigger was the death of the 22-year-old Kurd Mahsa Amini – she was arrested by the vice squad in mid-September for allegedly violating the dress code.

Iran has repeatedly accused Western countries, including Germany, of being behind the protests.

The Revolutionary Guards warned that there could be more acts of sabotage and called on "loyal people" to be vigilant.

Online networks had called for a three-day strike starting Monday.

The aim is to paralyze the Iranian economy.

During the so-called 14-15-16 protests - the numbers are the dates in the Persian calendar month of Azar - Iranians should avoid shopping to prevent any money from circulating in the Iranian banking system.

The last day of the strike on Wednesday is also National Student Day.

It is the anniversary of the killing of three opposition students by the Shah's police units in 1953. President Ebrahim Raisi is expected to visit two universities in Tehran on Wednesday.

Universities are among the scenes of the latest wave of protests.
