The false penalty of the match Spain - Yugoslavia of 82

2022-12-06T17:39:25.201Z

Former international referee Eduardo Iturralde explains why it was a free penalty and was not whistled out

Iturralde makes it clear, the penalty awarded to Spain in the match against Yugoslavia in 1982, in which Spain ended up winning 2-1, was a free penalty.

The referee acknowledges the penalty awarded by referee Lund Sorensen during the match as away.

However, Iturralde teaches that when you're behind a play it's normal for the angle to make it look like a penalty: "When you're a few meters away it makes you see it inside."

Iturralde says that if something like this had happened today, a penalty would also have been called, but the VAR would have corrected it.

"The foul is clear, but it was outside."

Referee Lund Sorensen did not take the field again after that match.
