Cristina Fernández de Kirchner's sentence to six years in prison and perpetual disqualification from holding public office spread like wildfire through telephone chats and social networks.

The unprecedented conviction for corruption against the vice president, the most loved and hated politician in Argentina, triggered a cascade of reactions.

For her supporters, she is innocent and the sentence aims to ban her from political life.

For detractors, the ruling confirms the existence of a matrix of state corruption and represents an important step against impunity.

The public address system installed in front of the federal courts failed and the few Kirchner protesters who gathered there had to resort to cell phones to find out that she had been found guilty.

Some cried;

Others shouted in anger at what they considered a "coup by the judicial mafia."

The majority, however, had complied with the order not to go out into the streets and reacted to the ruling from home.

“The ruling is a hogwash that has nothing to do with reality.

Prosecutors and the director of Clarín wrote the case while drinking mate in front of the lake," legislator José Luis Gioja tweeted, referring to the support of the ruling Frente de Todos. to condemn her.

This was the case of the head of the Justice portfolio, Martín Soria: “More than a decade ago, Cristina Kirchner was condemned by the media by Grupo Clarín.

Today, the Judicial Mafia turned that hatred into an illegitimate sentence that bears the signature of anti-Peronism and an unspeakable desire: to outlaw us once again and control democracy."

“The ruling is a hogwash that has nothing to do with reality.

The prosecutors and the director of Clarín wrote the case while they were drinking mate in front of the lake,” legislator José Luis Gioja said on the same social network, referring to the controversial trip made in October by a group of magistrates to the ranch of millionaire Joe Lewis in Patagonia.

The Human Rights Secretariat warned in a statement that the sentence "is inseparable from the upcoming electoral process and that it will conclude with the 2023 presidential elections."

For the secretariat, the ruling "constitutes a clear restriction of the political rights of the vice president."

"Justice has been done"

The opposition dreamed of a 12-year prison sentence, which the prosecutor Diego Luciani had requested, but celebrated the six-year sentence imposed by the Federal Oral Court 2. "It was impunity or justice and justice was done," published the newspaper. mayor of Buenos Aires, Horacio Rodríguez Larreta, one of the main opposition candidates for the presidency.

Rodríguez Larreta considered that the ruling confirms that "an unprecedented model of systemic corruption can be stopped" in Argentine history.

The Radical Civic Union, part of the opposition coalition Together for Change, described the sentence as "historic" and stressed that it is necessary to demand honesty and transparency from the country's rulers.

One of the rivals of the mayor of Buenos Aires in the internal opposition, former Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, warned that justice will have been done when the former president "returns all the money she stole and goes to jail for the crimes committed."

The sentence will only become final when all appeals have been exhausted, which can take years.

Kirchner cannot be detained because she enjoys privileges when holding public office.

But that immunity could be lifted next year if she remains determined not to run for a third presidential term in the 2023 election or even for a legislative seat.

The Argentine president, Alberto Fernández, remains silent for now from Montevideo, where he participated this morning in the Mercosur summit.

From abroad, the vice president received the support of some progressive Latin American leaders, such as former Bolivian president Evo Morales.

The Puebla Group denounced what it considers "a political trial orchestrated by the right with justice operators and the media to remove it from the democratic debate."
