The Bavarian Bishop invited climate activists of the last generation and Minister of the Interior Joachim Herrmann to a joint discussion.

Munich – In addition to the Ukraine war, the energy crisis and the RSV wave, they have been the topic of the last few weeks: the climate activists of the last generation.

Their forms of protest heat up tempers - whether it's throwing mashed potatoes or oil at art, or sticking themselves to the streets and bringing traffic to a near standstill.

In Bavaria, the judiciary is reacting with the controversial preventive detention, which is made possible by the Police Tasks Act (PAG).

The activists – at least so far – are not deterred by this.

A rapprochement has not taken place so far, the last generation sticks to their accusation that politicians are acting too hesitantly in the climate crisis, politicians complain about the activists' form of protest.

The Bavarian Bishop Heinrich Bedford-Strohm brought the parties together on Tuesday, December 6th.

Kleber crisis: Bedford-Strohm in conversation with climate activists and Herrmann

On Tuesday evening, Bedford-Strohm brought together climate activists from the last generation and the Bavarian Minister of the Interior, Joachim Herrmann (CSU).

According to a spokesman, the evangelical bishop proposed a Christmas break regarding the protests of the last generation.

With little success: A spokeswoman for the group said on Wednesday, December 7th, that this was out of the question - time was running out.

"We will continue and intensify the blockades." Herrmann commented, also on Wednesday, on the motivation of the activists: Their goal is to attract attention and media pressure through campaigns that are as sensational as possible - in which they also accept damage and impairments to bystanders to reach politics.

Those affected, who usually had little to do with the action themselves, would be “the activists’ bargaining chip against politicians,” says Herrmann.

Last generation: Instead of a Christmas break, "intensify blockades"

The last generation account also commented on the conversation with Heinrich Bedford-Strohm on Twitter.

The atmosphere was good, but there was a lack of political progress, the tweet said.

“Political inaction in the climate emergency puts us in enormous danger.

We cannot be expected to just accept that.”

Finally, also on Twitter, the announcement of the last generation to continue.

"We are always ready for constructive talks, but as long as the government blocks the simplest security measures, we block too," write the activists.

Only on Monday there were, among other things, many protests by climate activists.

On Wednesday, some were again sentenced to longer preventive detention.
