But no bomb find: Rheintalbahn temporarily closed

Because of alleged explosive ordnance from the Second World War, the Rhine Valley Railway was briefly closed on Wednesday morning between Offenburg and Lahr.

The all-clear came in the late morning and the route was released for train traffic again, according to Deutsche Bahn and the federal police.

Occasionally train cancellations and delays are possible.

Offenburg – A metallic object was found during track construction work.

At first it could not be ruled out that it was a mine or an aerial bomb.

The explosive ordnance disposal service finally classified the find as harmless.

It may be the metal filter of a respirator, said a spokesman for the federal police.

The Rhine Valley Railway between Karlsruhe and Basel is one of the busiest railway lines in south-west Germany.

According to Deutsche Bahn, more than 300 local, long-distance and freight trains use the route every day.

The connection is currently being expanded to four tracks.
