Ambassador and Assistant Representative of Iran to the United Nations, Zahraa Ershadi, confirmed that the use of sanctions as a political weapon by some countries contradicts humanitarian principles and limits the ability of governments to deal with natural disasters.
In a speech during the meeting (Enhancing the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid of the United Nations), Ershidi explained that the international community is still facing new and changing challenges, and there is suffering from the effects of natural disasters, armed conflicts, occupation, the Corona epidemic, unilateral sanctions and the blockade of countries, which hinders the development of countries, noting that in the western region Asia, especially Syria, Palestine, Yemen and Afghanistan, the policies of Western countries have led to great suffering for the peoples of these countries.
Ershidi stressed the need to observe all the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter, especially respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, strictly by other countries, as well as humanitarian relief organizations, pointing out that any crisis or humanitarian emergency should not lead to external military intervention, including under the pretext. The responsibility to protect, particularly those launched deliberately as part of a political agenda.
Ershadi indicated that Iran considers unilateral sanctions to be one of the main obstacles in the way of international efforts to provide humanitarian aid, and at the same time considers these sanctions to be one of the main causes of humanitarian crises around the world.
