At least four people were killed and 19 others wounded after Ukrainian forces shelled Donetsk on Tuesday, according to a statement from Russian-backed authorities in the occupied city.

The Russian Joint Control and Coordination Center in Donetsk did not provide any further information about the victims and CNN cannot independently verify its claim.

The pro-Russian authorities in the eastern Ukrainian city reported on Tuesday their third day of shelling by Kyiv forces.

Some background:

Donetsk has been occupied by pro-Russian separatists since 2014, yet Ukrainian forces remain just a few kilometers from its borders.

In October, Russia's legislature approved President Vladimir Putin's decision to annex four parts of Ukraine, namely Donetsk, Zaporizhia, Kherson and Luhansk, despite not having full control of those regions.

The move is illegal under international law.

By Josh Pennington, Nick Paton Walsh

The Ukrainian Armed Forces shot down 14 Iranian-made attack drones overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, it said in its daily operational update.

"During the last day, our troops shot down 14 Shahed 136 drones, 1 Orlan, and 2 others that we have not yet identified," the AFU message said.

CNN cannot independently verify the Ukrainian military's claim.

On Tuesday, a Western official told CNN that Russia had "run out" of Iranian attack drones in recent weeks, but the Kremlin was anticipating a "resupply."

The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Some background:

Russian forces have used a number of Iranian-made drones in Ukraine, often in attacks on infrastructure.

The Shahed is one of the most used models.

In November, Iran acknowledged that it had sent a limited number of drones to Russia in the months before it began its invasion of Ukraine.
