After the World Cup fiasco, Hazard says goodbye to the Belgium team

By Reuters

The captain of the Belgian team, Eden Hazard, announced this Wednesday his retirement from the national team at the age of 31, after the elimination of his team in the group stage of the World Cup.

The striker played in all three Group F games, but did not score in Belgium's win over Canada, the loss to Morocco and the goalless draw with Croatia, which finished third.

Hazard made his international debut in 2008 and scored 33 goals in 126 games.

He helped Belgium reach the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup, where they lost to eventual champions France and beat England in a play-off for third place.

"I have decided to end my international career. The succession is ready," Hazard wrote on Instagram.

"Today the page is turned... Thank you for your love. Thank you for your unparalleled support. Thank you for all this happiness shared since 2008... I will miss you."

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez resigned from his post on Thursday after a disappointing tournament in Qatar for the team, second in the FIFA ranking.

A defibrillator allows Blind to play the quarterfinals of the World Cup

By Reuters

Netherlands defender Daley Blind could pinch himself in disbelief when he comes out on Friday against Argentina in the World Cup quarterfinal match.

Not because it's his 99th cap, and his second meeting with Lionel Messi and Argentina after the 2014 semi-final in Brazil, but because he's been able to keep playing despite suffering two heart attacks on the pitch.

Blind, 32, wears an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) on his chest to detect an irregular heartbeat and deliver a life-saving shock in sudden cardiac arrest.

It's the same device that allowed Christian Eriksen to resume his career after the terrible drama of his cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark at Euros last year.

Blind, who spent four years at Manchester United between spells with Ajax Amsterdam, had a suspected heart attack in a Champions League game for Ajax against Valencia in 2019, feeling dizzy and quickly being withdrawn for treatment.

Doctors diagnosed a heart rhythm disorder and initially suggested that his professional career was over.

"You'd see the whole world looking at me in fear," Blind recalls in an emotional documentary titled 'Never Again Standing Still' about coping with the disease, which premiered just before the start of the World Cup.

Eriksen, his former teammate at Ajax, also appears in the film and Blind tells how the reaction of his father Danny, also an international for the Netherlands and now Louis van Gaal's assistant in the World Cup, gave him the necessary impetus to continue.

"One thing that has always stuck with me is my father's reaction. He remained stoic. He didn't give up, he kept asking the doctor if there were other options. His sober vision gave me hope."

The Palestinian flag flies on the pitch as Morocco celebrates its historic World Cup victory

Several Moroccan national team players unfurled a Palestinian flag on the pitch as they celebrated Qatar's historic World Cup victory over Spain on Tuesday.

Following a dramatic penalty shootout, Morocco became the first Arab team to reach the World Cup quarterfinals.

This is the second time Moroccan players have raised the Palestinian flag after winning a match.

Morocco's player Jawad El Yamiq raised the Palestinian flag as he celebrated his country's 2-1 victory over Canada last week.

Moroccan soccer fans were also seen waving a "Free Palestine" banner during the North African country's 2-0 win over Belgium earlier in the tournament.

The rules of FIFA, organizer of the tournament, prohibit the use of banners, flags and flyers that are considered political, offensive and/or discriminatory.

"The promotion or announcement of political or religious messages or any other political or religious action, inside or in the immediate vicinity of the stadium, by any means, is strictly prohibited before, during and after the matches," establishes the FIFA regulations. .

Soccer authorities have occasionally issued fines for displaying the Palestinian flag inside soccer fields.

The flag movement was cheered by Arabs on social media, as users in Libya, Morocco, Egypt and Saudi Arabia celebrated the Moroccan victory.

Videos on social media also show Palestinians celebrating Morocco's victory on the streets of several cities in the West Bank and Gaza.

CNN has reached out to FIFA for comment.

Morocco, historic: eliminated Spain on penalties and reaches the quarterfinals for the first time

Morocco gave the great bump in the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar on Tuesday by beating Spain in the penalty shootout after equalizing 0-0 in 120 minutes.

Spain was almost absolute owner of the ball during practically the entire game, but was never able to break the defensive bolt proposed by the African team.

Stopped on the counterattack, Morocco disturbed Unai Simón's arc at some point, which saved Spain in one of the last plays of extra time.

In the penalty shootout, the Moroccans were absolute masters of the scene: they converted three of the four shots they had, while Spain went to zero (two saves by goalkeeper Bonou and a shot on the post).

Now, Morocco will face the winner of the series between Portugal and Switzerland, who play later.

The emotional letter from Enner Valencia, the scorer of Ecuador

Enner Valencia of Ecuador looks dejected after his team's loss in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Group A match between Ecuador and Senegal at Khalifa International Stadium on November 29, 2022 in Doha, Qatar.

Enner Valencia was, without a doubt, the great figure of Ecuador in the World Cup: author of 3 goals, the experienced striker became the top scorer for El Tri in the history of the World Cup.

And despite the fact that Ecuador had a good tournament, they ended up eliminated in the first round after the defeat in the last match against Senegal.

In the last hours, Valencia published an emotional letter on his social networks, in which he showed his pain for the elimination.

"It is still hard to get up from this hard blow. This team, this family, deserved more. We fought on the field as brothers and we proudly defended our colors. I feel proud of each one of you my brothers, we gave everything we had, we did not we keep nothing. Thank you Profe for being the head of this family, thanks to the doctors, props, leaders and all those who are part of the TRI," says the note published in Spanish and English.

The soccer player said that it was "a dream to see our country united in a single hug" during the World Cup.

“I can only say thank you Ecuador, thank you for having trusted our team, thank you for dreaming with us.

That football continues to unite us and that in any corner of the world that we have to be, we proudly say that we are ECUADOR! ", concludes the letter.

Spain and Morocco, for a place in the quarterfinals

Spain and Morocco are looking for a place in the quarterfinals of the World Cup in Qatar, in one of the matches that will close the round of 16 of the tournament.

FIFA opens proceedings against Uruguay

FIFA reported on Monday that its Disciplinary Commission opened proceedings against the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) and four of its players for misconduct after the elimination of the World Cup in the initial phase, reported Reuters.

Uruguay was left out of the World Cup despite its 2-0 victory over Ghana at the close of Group H, in a match in which, according to several of its players, the referee made serious mistakes that harmed the "celeste" as an alleged penalty against Edinson Cavani in the closing stages of the match.

After the match, many players charged the referee and accused FIFA of harming Uruguay.

FIFA said proceedings were opened against José María Giménez, Edinson Cavani, Fernando Muslera and Diego Godín for "possible violations of articles 11 and 12 of the Disciplinary Code" for the incidents after the match.

This would be the road and the crossings of Spain until the final of the World Cup in Qatar 2022

(Credit: Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)

Spain, who managed to advance to the round of 16 as second in Group E and will face Morocco this Tuesday, arrived in Qatar as one of the favorites to win the World Cup.

This would be the crossroads that await you if you keep moving forward.

If they beat Morocco in the round of 16, their opponent in the quarterfinals could be Portugal or Switzerland, depending on which of the two prevails in the match set for Wednesday, December 6.

The semifinal, if they continue in the race after that match, would be played against England or France, which will be measured by the quarterfinals on Saturday, December 10.

These two teams, ranked four and five in the FIFA ranking prior to the championship, are among the favorites to win the World Cup.

But these possible crosses mean that they would not face two of the best positioned players until the final: Argentina and Brazil.

England's Raheem Sterling leaves Qatar after home burglary, according to Press Association

England soccer star Raheem Sterling will leave the World Cup in Qatar after armed intruders broke into his home while his family was inside, according to the Press Association (PA).

On Sunday, Sterling was absent from England's 3-0 win over Senegal after the incident occurred on Saturday night, Palestinian Authority media report.

The news agency says Sterling was "shocked and concerned" for the well-being of his children after the robbery.

On Sunday, England manager Gareth Southgate said Sterling was dealing with a "family matter".

“He is dealing with a family matter.

I've spent quite a bit of time with him this morning, but now I've had to give him to other people to help him with that," Southgate said.

"He's going to go and take care of that matter and then we'll have to take it from there really."
