Opinion Who is afraid of a demonstration? | Israel today

2022-12-07T07:10:20.070Z

Eisenkot who organizes such a demonstration should know that the demonstration is a double-edged sword. When she succeeds - there is no one as effective as her, and when she fails - she drags the public into a political cesspit

It was a canned night in the Knesset when Prime Minister Begin asked to approve the peace agreement with Egypt. Everyone wanted to make a speech and it was boring, and the former chief of staff Mota Gur, the strategic advisor Behira Bardugo and I decided with a wave of our mouth to go to Limat, before it was handed over to Egypt.

In the sandy city, thousands demonstrated against the withdrawal, and in a fortified bunker a group led by Tzachi Hanegbi was stationed, threatening to act dramatically and in a secret manner.

When we arrived I asked to talk to him.

He emerged from nowhere, ready to say something not to be published.

Mota refused to listen, lest the content would oblige him to report to the police and he would be in breach of his commitment to Chachi.

More than 40 years have passed.

Hanegbi began appearing in the Friday studio on Channel 12, and this week explained why the planned demonstration against the next government is out of place.

As in the well-known song: "As a wheel spins".

Ironically, Benjamin Netanyahu's supporters are now engaged in a propaganda campaign against the demonstrations.

Although they claim that all types of demonstrations "will not move the new government" even if MK Gadi Eisenkot manages to gather about a million citizens in the city square, but the previous round proved that the opposite is true.

At first the protesters received little attention.

But when the former Air Force senior Amir Hashakal was arrested, and rejected the pleas of the police officer to be released for Shabbat under a commitment to be absent for two weeks - the match was lit.

From that moment on, it was impossible to stop the demonstrators.

The police reacted with frustration, and in an unusual confrontation the officer Niso Guetta attacked two law enforcement officers.

And not only was he convicted, but his conduct poured fuel on the fire.

So is the false statement that came out from Netanyahu as if the protesters had entered his house, and even the security officials denied his words.

The aggression of some of Netanyahu's supporters hurt the protesters all over the country and threatened them, but in the main - helped their cause.

In those months of heavy rains and oppressive heat, there was no huge counter-demonstration.

Why did a few Bibi supporters settle for attacking a protester here and a protester there, with threats and righteous arguments?

The tests conducted by various parties, including private entrepreneurs, testified almost unanimously that Netanyahu and the leaders of the Likud do not have the power to mobilize a large number of people.

They tried organized transportation, rumors spread that they paid the protesters - but yuk, there is none.

The general public who voted for Bibi avoided flooding the streets and placing camp against camp, flag under flag.

Even in Balfour Square there was only one vigil, in front of a crowd of thousands of protesters.

All the political seismographs testify that the picture is repeating itself even now.

Unfortunately for the protesters, their leadership proceeded as Rav Michaeli was to act, who by refusing to unite with Meretz lost about four mandates and gave Likud the first right to form a government.

Initiatives against the intention of Netanyahu, Levin, Smotrich and Ben Gvir to turn the Supreme Court upside down, remove him from the dock and appoint a special minister for Mount Meron as an embarrassing gesture to the Rashbi have now begun to appear on social media.

In the face of such a government, the demonstration is more important than in the previous round, when a motley coalition wrested power from Netanyahu's hands for a year and a half.

But the organizer of such a demonstration should know that the demonstration is a double-edged sword.

When she succeeds - there is no one as effective as her, and when she fails - she drags the public into a political cesspit.

As the sages said about the Jewish people: when it rises - to the stars, and when it descends - to dust.
