Remaining construction work is still ongoing.

But the new club management is already planning numerous projects.

And an allotment gardener is building a very special attraction in his plot.

Only the general lease agreement between the city and the association has not yet been signed.

Penzberg - for 50 years it was a magnet for children from near and far: the large model railway that once ran in Sanimoor near Iffeldorf.

After her owner had to go into a retirement home, she has now found a new home in Penzberg's "Breitfilz" - on Martin Volkmann's plot.

The 70-year-old used to help the former owner of the railway, Theo Weber, with the system.

Now he has taken it over.

"I am incredibly grateful to Theo Weber that I can continue his life's work in his name in Penzberg," emphasizes Volkmann.

The facility in Sanimoor stood still for seven years, and vandals also destroyed the ticket machine that visitors used to use to operate the train by inserting coins.

Well-known model railway system is to be expanded

Over the past few months, Volkmann has rebuilt the model railway with the approximately 200 meter long track system, the artificial landscape, the buildings and trains in Sanimoor and on his lot.

"The train is already running," he says happily.

At least in parts.

However, the trains have to stay in the depot over the winter, because figures have to be cleaned and buildings repaired.

In addition, the facility is to be expanded further.

The landscapes and rails required for this are still in Sanimoor, says Volkmann.

The railway is scheduled to start operating again in the spring

As Marianne Fesl, second chairwoman of the “Breitfilz” association, says, the Volkmann association made a neighboring plot available for the facility – free of charge.

So that young and old model railway enthusiasts can soon watch the trains.

Volkmann would like to build more landscapes on the additional plot over the coming months;

such as an amusement park and a large farm.

In the spring, he hopes to get the Sanimoor railroad back in service.

It is planned that interested parties can come by on fixed dates.

However, further details have not yet been determined.

Setting up the Sanimoor railway in the Penzberg allotment gardens is just one project of the "Breitfilz" association, which had a new chairman in Konrad Wisdom in the summer.

The 37-year-old engineer replaced Paul Hattemer, who had managed the allotment garden facility through difficult times in recent years.

In the meantime, the Penzberg city council has adopted the development plan for the site as a statute and thus legalized the allotment gardens.

The newly installed extinguishing water tank is full and the network of escape routes is almost complete.

The tank and escape route network are part of the fire protection concept that was drawn up after two fires in 2019 as a prerequisite for using the allotment gardens.

Road construction should be finished in the spring

According to Fesl, the road construction should be finished in the spring.

The preliminary lease agreement between their club and the city will run until the end of 2023. By then at the latest, the “Breitfilzler” are hoping for an unlimited general lease agreement.

However, this can only be closed once an ongoing change in the land use plan has been completed, according to Fesl, who emphasizes how good the cooperation with the Penzberg town hall is.

Her club currently has around 270 members.

Together they have developed numerous ideas for the future.

According to Fesl, one of them is a “green classroom” for school classes.

And her association wants to do more for seniors;

for example by inviting the residents of retirement homes to the facility, where they could spend a few pleasant hours in nature.

In addition, according to chairman Konrad Wisdom, the association wants to take part in the state support program "Orchard for all" and plant fruit trees in the facility.

A few pitches still available

By the way: There are still a few vacant plots in the leisure garden area in “Breitfilz”.

Interested parties can apply at kontakt@freizeitgaerten-breitfilz.de.

The association points out that citizens from Penzberg are given preference.

According to the board of directors, this is a wish of the city.
