The Democratic candidate for the Senate from the state of Georgia, Raphael Warnock, won the second round tonight (Tuesday), guaranteeing the party a majority of 51 members in the Senate.
According to polls, Warnock beat Republican Herschel Walker, who received the support of former President Donald Trump, by 40,000 votes, or 51.4% versus 48.6%.
As the preliminary results were announced, Warnock took to the stage to thank his supporters.
A pastor from the church in Atlanta where Martin Luther King preached, Warnock began his victory speech with the words "Six more years!".
"After a difficult campaign, I am honored to say the four most powerful words ever spoken in a democracy: The people have spoken."
Warnock is one of 12 children of a priest and a mother who picked cotton.
His mother was at the victory party in Atlanta after voting for her son.
"I'm Georgia," Warnock said.
"I am the example of the country's history, of its pain, of promise, of cruelty and of possibility. But because this is America, because there is always a way to make our country greater again in the face of almost non-existent odds, here we are standing here together."
President Joe Biden called to congratulate Warnock: "Tonight, Georgia voters voted for democracy, rejected Trump's MAGA theory and most importantly: sent a good man back to the Senate," Biden tweeted.

Walker acknowledged defeat and thanked his team.
"I don't want any Americans to lose faith in America. I want you to believe in America and continue to believe in the Constitution and our elected officials... vote regardless of what happens," he said.
Walker's loss is another blow to Trump's standing in the Republican Party.
Overall, the candidates he supported in the midterm congressional elections did not win, raising questions about his support.
Before the results were announced, former Republican congressman Will Hurd tweeted that "If Walker loses tonight, it will be the sixth time in a row that a Democrat has defeated a Trump candidate in the state of Georgia. It's time to move on, build the future with conservative values and get rid of the crazy nonsense." .
