The "Buddha Jumping Over the Wall" scam that ravaged Hong Kong earlier, now has a variant version.
A person in charge of a kitchen utensils company received a call yesterday saying that he wanted to order olive oil on his behalf, but was eventually defrauded of 440,000 yuan.
The police appeal to restaurants not to advance payment easily when accepting large orders.
When receiving deposits from calling customers, you should pay attention to whether the "available balance" has increased, and do not rely solely on the "deposit slip" and "account balance" as a successful transfer.
In addition, if you receive a telephone order from a group or private organization, you can search for the contact information of the group or private organization and contact the relevant organization directly.
If you have any doubts, you can call the police's "Anti-Scam Easy" 24-hour hotline 18222.
The police said that they received a report yesterday (December 7) from a 50-year-old woman in charge of a kitchen utensils company. Claims that the kitchenware company earns commissions.
The kitchenware company then called the fake supplier to order olive oil and transferred about $440,000 to the bank account provided by the fake supplier.
The female person in charge subsequently lost contact with the scammer and suspected that she had been cheated, so she reported it to the police.
After preliminary investigation, the case was classified as "obtaining property by deception" and was handed over to the criminal investigation team of Yau Tsim Police District for follow-up. No one has been arrested yet.
