The Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD) criticizes the B2 tunnel for Starnberg and advocates a turnaround in traffic.

Starnberg

– The Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD) encourages an end to the B 2 tunnel in Starnberg.

The association also rejects any kind of bypass.

Instead, it makes more sense to “promote the switch to bus, train and bike more courageously,” according to a statement from the association on the occasion of the special session of the city council on the tunnel.

In it, the board members of the VCD district association Fürstenfeldbruck-Starnberg-Gauting, Heinrich Moser, Andrea Schmölzer and Gerhard Hippmann, explain: “Tunnels and bypasses are traffic planning from yesterday.

They are a ridiculously expensive invitation to drive.

In terms of efficiency, climate protection and for our health, there is much better.” The project completely misses the goal of sustainable mobility and puts a disproportionate burden on public coffers and the climate.

The VCD fears that the tunnel will motivate more drivers from Pöcking, Feldafing, Tutzing and Weilheim to commute through Starnberg towards Munich.

He calls the cost-benefit ratio "questionable" and misses critical questioning of the project.

He is also critical of the cost increases to well over 300 million euros - especially since important issues of ongoing operations such as fire protection are still unresolved.

In addition, Moser, Schmölzer and Hippmann are skeptical about traffic calming in Starnberg city center after the tunnel construction.

"Binding resolutions or even plans for traffic calming are missing," they write.

"On the contrary: Statements by the state building authority indicate that a gradation to the municipal road is unrealistic."

Counter-proposals: express bus to the U 3, relocation of the end of the autobahn

Instead of tunnels and bypasses, the VCD advocates a turnaround in traffic.

Among other things, the proposals include moving the end of the autobahn forward to Perca, in order to continue the B 2 from there in two lanes plus the necessary turning lanes.

The two remaining lanes should be redesignated as bus and bicycle lanes.

An express bus to the U 3 in the south of Munich with its own lane would improve Starnberg's public transport connections.

And additions to S-Bahn and DB stations south of Munich, including P&R facilities, bicycle parking facilities and bus connections, could make local public transport even more attractive.

After the special session, Andrea Schmölzer drew a thoughtful conclusion to Starnberger Merkur.

Although she has the impression that the Weilheim State Building Authority and the Starnberg City Council are working very professionally and meticulously on the project, the planning effort is enormous, the costs are a big question mark and the CO2 emissions from the construction are not an issue for the public authorities.

"If the resources for public transport, cycling and walking were only roughly the same, I could sit relaxed on the sofa in the evenings," summarized Schmölzer, who is also active in the STAgenda in Starnberg and has played a key role in organizing city cycling for years.
