Christmas in the form of a truck: Decorated and illuminated, a MAN truck gave young patients at the Erlangen University Hospital a foretaste of Christmas Eve.

Erlangen - This has never happened before in the children's and youth clinic of the Erlangen University Hospital: With a cheerful trumpet and a roaring engine, a truck almost 20 meters long rolled into the courtyard of the children's clinic on Sunday afternoon - decorated for Christmas and illuminated all around.

According to a press release from the hospital, a professional driver from Erlangen had successfully applied for a tour with the MAN Christmas truck.

This is not just a small dream come true for him.

He also gave the youngest patients of the University Hospital Erlangen an unforgettable experience on the second Sunday in Advent.

A welcome relief.

“The children who are currently being treated in our wards stood in amazement and waved on the balconies.

All of the outpatients were waiting for the truck in the courtyard, and some were even allowed to climb into the driver's cab," reports Marion Müller, head educator at the university hospital, who organized the surprise pre-Christmas visit with her team.

The trailer of the 18-ton truck contained many small gifts for the sick children and young people, and truck captain Johannes Wahl beamed with them.

As the driver of the local book bus, the man from Erlangen has been shunting a similarly heavy vehicle through the streets of the Huguenot town for years to provide young and old with reading material.

The huge vehicle was well received by the children.

"I've always wanted to take hold of the steering wheel of a MAN TGX," says the professional driver, who applied to MAN for a trip with the Christmas truck and gave the children's hospital at the University Hospital Erlangen as the destination, with a laugh.

A lot of commitment in the children and youth department - not only at Christmas

Head educator Müller raves about the campaign on the second Advent.

"It was a very special event for our children and young people, who are unable to take part in many of the pre-Christmas events because of their illnesses." bring to young patients.

The university hospital is not only broadly positioned in the children's and youth department.

There has also been a specialist department for post-Covid patients since the beginning of December.

According to the clinic's press office, trainees from MAN transform a truck and trailer into a shiny Christmas truck over a period of several weeks with meter-long chains of LED lights and lots of gold decorations.

After the campaign had to be interrupted in the past two years due to the pandemic, this year two Christmas trucks are on their way throughout Bavaria to kindergartens, schools and social institutions, which the drivers indicate in their application.
