Mexican authorities announced today that a soldier and seven gunmen were killed during armed clashes between army forces and gunmen in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, near the border with the United States.
Xinhua quoted the Public Safety Secretariat of Tamaulipas state as saying in a statement: "Armed clashes took place between army forces in the state's city of Nuevo Laredo, resulting in the death of one soldier and seven gunmen, and the wounding of seven other soldiers."
The city of Nuevo Laredo, on Mexico's east coast, is one of the main regional centers for drug trafficking, and an area where drug cartels fight.
