Knesset members Miki Zohar and Eli Dellal (Likud) have submitted a bill that seeks to ban the photography of soldiers during operational activities.
This, in response to the incident that took place about two weeks ago in Hebron, in which extreme leftist activists documented soldiers and got into a confrontation with them.
The proposal, which was drafted with the assistance of the legal wing of the "If You Want" movement, states: "Whoever scripts or photographs soldiers and members of the security forces while performing their duties, as an act of protest and with the conscious intention of hindering the execution of their mission or undermining them, shall be sentenced to up to five years in prison."
The MKs, whose proposal also includes punishment for the distributors of the content, reasoned that "For years, IDF soldiers and security forces have witnessed the phenomenon of 'protest documentation' carried out by anarchists, anti-Israel activists or 'pro-Palestinians.' This is not part of a journalistic and documentary activity, and its purpose is one - disturbing the soldiers and harming their spirit."
According to MK Zohar, "The immediate response to the anarchists' war on IDF soldiers is to forbid them from taking pictures of them. In any reformed country, the camera would be confiscated and the anarchist would be arrested."
MK Dellal added: "Our soldiers should receive our backing, no one enlists to be harassed and bullied by anarchists."
Matan Peleg, chairman of Am Tartus, explained that "the difference between journalistic or documentary photography and using a camera as a tool to interfere with a soldier is huge.
It is important that anyone who interferes knows that his action will be punished."
Since 2005, the "Betzelem" organization has been operating the "Armed with Cameras" project.
Alongside the members of the organization, activists from dozens of left-wing organizations routinely document soldiers in conflict zones, and many times they even distribute edited and trending documentation of the events.
