Under the title (challenges facing recognition), the General Commission for Forensic Medicine, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross, held a workshop at the Dama Rose Hotel in Damascus.

The two-day workshop centered on practical studies on deaths resulting from drowning and burning, in addition to forensic medicine's experience in medical malpractice and developments in the Authority's work.

Director General of the Commission, Dr. Zaher Hajjo, referred to the destruction of some forensic medicine centers due to the terrorist war on Syria, but work continues to document new scientific developments, overcome obstacles and difficulties, and work to develop performance in accordance with the best international standards and restore a number of forensic medicine centers in the governorates and return them to the work.

The coordinator of the forensic medicine program at the International Committee of the Red Cross in Syria, Sarah Ellingham, drew attention to the cooperation and support provided by the committee in the field of rehabilitating morgues and forensic medicine centers in various governorates, indicating that during the next year there will be greater cooperation and support for internal and external practical training for doctors.

The honorary president of forensic medicine in Syria, Dr. Hussein Nofal, gave a presentation explaining the task of the forensic doctor in the event that he was asked to have medical experience with medical malpractices and problems that occur with doctors and how the judiciary deals with him as an expert and not a witness, pointing out that the profession of the forensic doctor carries high risks and has An important role in the judiciary to issue the appropriate judgment.

In turn, the Director of the Forensic Medicine Center in Tartous Governorate, Dr. Ali Bilal, explained the role of forensic medicine in revealing the identity of the victims of the sunken Lebanese boat accident off the coast of the governorate by applying photographs, virtual examination of the corpses, and keeping belongings that prove their identity, in addition to taking samples from the bodies to conduct a DNA analysis. Any of the hair and skin, in addition to some traditional methods of identification through a tattoo or artificial replacement of teeth or a specific color of clothing or a ring or a surgical procedure.

Dr. Bilal stated that the prolonged stay in the water would increase the factors of putrefaction and cause a major change in the features of the corpse, which would make it difficult for the forensic doctor to work.

While the forensic doctor, Dr. Nasser Al-Shaher, indicated that the most common mistakes in the practice of forensic medicine is the report of disability after accidents, pointing to the possibility of submitting an open medical report and the importance of knowing when to give an open report and when to close the report.
