Apparently too little was invested in the Tegernsee Bahn for years, and now a lot has to be caught up.

The route between Schaftlach and Tegernsee is closed until December 14th.

Tegernsee – Where the trains of the Bavarian Regiobahn (BRB) normally roll over the tracks, large holes are currently opening up again and again.

Between Gmund and Seeglas, construction workers have been busy fixing the subsoil and replacing sleepers since Monday.

"In this area we are dealing with sea clay, a difficult subsoil," explains Michael Bourjau, Managing Director of Tegernsee-Bahn, which is responsible for the section between Schaftlach and Tegernsee.

Construction work on the Tegernsee Bahn: Bad subsoil as the cause

First, a deep dig is made over a length of 100 meters, the holes are filled with large stones, covered with fleece and then filled with gravel.

"The Seeton sucks water, which causes problems for the track bed," says Bourjau, recalling that this June the track between Gmund and Seeglas had already become crooked after heavy rainfall.

"Of course we could set up slow-moving sections, as is the case in many places in the German railway network," says the managing director, "but we are now doing what we can for safety reasons."

Not only because of this construction site, passengers on the route between Schaftlach and Tegernsee will probably have to change buses and accept inconvenience until December 14th.

However, a number of other construction works will be completed during this period.

In the area of the "Freikircherl" near Schaftlach, sleepers are being replaced and the track bed is being upgraded, and the level crossing is also getting new barriers here.

"The measures are now hitting me with full force," says Bourjau, regretting that too little has been invested in recent years.

The work to ensure compliance with the standards would devour around 2.2 million euros this year alone.

The replacement of sleepers at Krottenthal, the construction of cable troughs along the route, the renovation of the level crossing on Max-Obermayer-Straße in Gmund and the pruning of bushes and trees along the entire route have already been completed.

In order not to always have to lock, work was also done at night.

Working at the Tegernsee-Bahn: 2023 it will continue

The next big chunk will follow in spring 2023. Then the increase in the 150-meter-long platform in Tegernsee, which has been postponed for a long time, should be tackled.

The government of Upper Bavaria supports this measure with 80 percent.

A two to three-week closure of the route between Gmund and Tegernsee is then necessary again.

Anyone who thinks that the new platform will then match the boarding and exiting level of the Lint trains, which has been heavily criticized since their introduction, is wrong.

"This fact could only change with the use of new trains," says Bourjau.

In other words: at the earliest after a new tender in two to three years.
