County – PETA has filed a complaint against 26 farms with the public prosecutor in Augsburg.
The reason: their tethering”.
One of the companies is located in the district.
According to PETA, the reason for the ad was the judgment of the Administrative Court in Münster, which assessed tethering as a violation of the Animal Welfare Act.
The public prosecutor's office has not yet reported, says district office spokesman Wolfgang Müller.
If the ad is pursued, a statement from the veterinary office will probably be requested.
Tethering is prohibited in the Animal Welfare Act.
But not in the Animal Welfare Livestock Ordinance.
Although calves (up to six months) may not be tied, it is anchored there.
However, this is not specifically regulated for older animals.
They must be “behaviourally housed” and “the animal's ability to exercise in a species-appropriate manner must not be restricted in a way that causes it pain or avoidable suffering or harm”.
Tethering is viewed increasingly critically, and the federal government is also planning a ban by 2030. The Bavarian Farmers' Association, on the other hand, is opposed to the ban and is in favor of a transition from tethering to loose housing.
If new buildings are built in older stables, the way the animals are kept also usually changes.
