At the turn of the year, numerous electricity providers raise their prices.

An overview shows who raises the most and what worries consumer advocates.

Munich – The situation on the electricity market has now calmed down a bit.

After record prices were reached this year as a result of the energy crisis, they have now leveled off at a high level.

Nevertheless, numerous electricity customers will face a price increase in the new year.

Because many providers are only now adjusting the prices for their household customers.

Electricity price increases: Up to 236 percent more expensive

The comparison portal Check24 is already aware of more than 580 cases of electricity price increases in the basic supply at the turn of the year.

“Around 7.3 million households are affected,” reports the company.

The average increase is 54 percent.

But there are also providers who are turning the price screw even more clearly.

Check24 has identified the ten utilities that have increased their prices the most:

Customers of Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG have to be prepared for the biggest cost shock with the Emden branch.

A price increase of 236.1 percent is pending for January 1, 2023.

With an annual consumption of 5000 kilowatt hours, this results in additional costs of 3525 euros.

But it will also be significantly more expensive for customers of Stadtwerke Haslach or Energiewerk Meckenheim.

The price increase here is also over 200 percent.

Electricity price brake: Consumer advocates fear abuse

For the time being, this should hurt consumers less – at least if they use electricity sparingly.

Because the electricity price brake is intended to dampen the burden of high electricity costs.

The price for households and smaller companies for 80 percent of the previous year's consumption should be capped at 40 cents per kilowatt hour.

If the customer consumes more, he pays the normal contract price.

The state pays the difference between the supplier's price and the 40 cents.

But consumer advocates see this with concern and fear abuse.

"We do not rule out that one or the other company uses the price brakes to increase more than is absolutely necessary," says Udo Sieverding, energy expert at the North Rhine-Westphalia consumer advice center.

There is a ban on abuse in the draft law.

"But who's supposed to check that seriously?

And besides, the providers could already increase in January before the law comes into force. "
