Greek anarchists claimed responsibility for the attack on two cars at the Italian embassy in Greece on Thursday, December 8, explaining that they wanted to protest against the imprisonment of an anarchist in Italy.
The attack, committed on December 2 before dawn, caused no injuries.
A homemade device had destroyed one of two vehicles parked in the parking lot of the residence of the first counselor of the embassy, in the suburbs of Athens, according to the Greek police.
Another homemade device, placed near the second diplomatic car, had not exploded.
“Comrade, we will never forget you”
A group calling itself "
Core to avenge Carlo Giuliani
", in reference to an activist killed in 2001 by the carabinieri during a G8 summit in Genoa, Italy, claimed that the attack was aimed at supporting an Italian anarchist, Alfredo Cospito, on hunger strike since October.
"
Comrade, we will never forget you, no matter how hard they try to bury you
," the group added.
Alfredo Cospito had been arrested in September 2012 with another man, Nicola Gay, after an attack the previous May against Roberto Adinolfi, the CEO of Ansaldo Nucleare, who had been injured in the legs.
The far-right Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, had expressed her "
deep concern
" from Rome, ensuring that the case was being followed "
with the greatest attention
".
Strong condemnation of the attack
For its part, Athens "
strongly condemned the attack
".
“
Such unacceptable actions will in no way disturb the excellent relations and long-standing bonds of friendship between Greece and its partner and ally Italy
,” according to a statement from the Greek Foreign Ministry.
Attacks with homemade incendiary devices, often causing damage but rarely victims, against diplomatic political targets, banks or foreign companies, are frequent in Greece.
