No mask requirement in Bavarian public transport - that's what the government of the Free State around Prime Minister Markus Söder decided.

The Augsburg Stadtwerke approve the Bavarian initiative.

Augsburg – On Tuesday, December 6th, the Bavarian cabinet decided to abolish the obligation to wear a mask in local public transport in Bavaria.

From Saturday, December 10th, public transport passengers can therefore do without a medical mouth and nose cover.

Klaus Holetschek, part of the cabinet as Bavarian Minister of Health, took this step because of a “lack of proportionality”.

While in Berlin, Holetschek's departmental colleague Karl Lauterbach criticized the Free State's initiative, the Augsburg public utility company endorsed the "return to normality in road traffic" and their buses and trams in a press release.

Since April 2020, masks have been compulsory as protection against the corona virus.

"We welcome the abolition of the mask requirement in public transport," says Stadtwerke Managing Director Dr.

Walter Casazza.

"The normality that has been returning to other areas of life for months will soon also be felt in Augsburg's trams and buses." This is a great relief for many passengers.

After the mask requirement fell months ago in almost all other areas of life, the mask requirement in public transport was no longer understandable for many passengers.

Stadtwerke managing director: “Cannot control mask requirement across the board”

According to the company, increased reluctance was noticed in direct contact with the passengers - checking whether masks were worn had become increasingly difficult.

"Although 97 percent of the people of Augsburg still comply with the obligation to wear masks, the willingness to do so is declining and, as a transport company, we cannot control the obligation to wear masks across the board in vehicles," says Stadtwerke boss Casazza.

However, the decision of the Bavarian state government remains controversial, in politics and in social media.

While Minister Holetschek defends the procedure - the mask requirement is simply no longer appropriate - he continues to appeal for wear.

From Saturday this is basically voluntary in Bavaria.

In Saxony-Anhalt, from Thursday, December 8th, daily duty on the bus and train will be a thing of the past.
