You have to do it first: For the fourth time in a row, the Miesbach high school has been awarded three stars - i.e. at the highest level - as "Environmental School in Europe - International School of Sustainability".

In an online posting yesterday, Minister for the Environment Thorsten Faithr and Minister for Education Michael Piazolo, as well as Norbert Schäffer, State Chairman of the State Association for Bird Protection, praised the commitment of the 624 schools from all over Bavaria that had received awards this time.

For the grammar school, this live stream was the occasion for a small ceremony, in which headmistress Claudia Reiserer not only handed over the new environmental flag to the school family and praised their commitment, but also selected students from different environmental schools presented their activities.

climate protection and waste

In terms of content, the Miesbach high school focused on two core areas, as explained by biology teacher Martina Stahl, who heads the environmental working group at the school together with her colleague Matthias Brandstätter: climate protection measures and the issue of waste.

The first area includes the care of the biotope in the Agatharieder and Leitzacher Moor as part of a P seminar in Q12, in which 16 schoolchildren took part.

Maintenance and mapping were carried out with the help of the landscape conservation association.

The continuation in the next school year anchors this project in school life in the long term, which in turn had a positive effect on the evaluation.

There were also some projects on ecological agriculture and climate-friendly nutrition.

This included the development of a species-appropriate, climate-friendly farm animal stable, a climate-friendly breakfast, a play, a visit to an organic farmer and the organization of a colorful evening.

Participation in city cycling and the W seminar “Understanding and acting on climate change” rounded off the range.

The garbage field of action, on the other hand, was carried out as a large, cross-year and cross-subject project and extended over the entire school year.

The environmental working group took over the coordination.

Water from the Schlierach was examined for microplastics, waste was mapped for meso- and macroplastics, waste was collected at the Schlierach and scientists from the Kiel research workshop worked together.

Reducing waste was also an issue.

"The aim is for the whole school to live and learn about sustainability," says Stahl.

"We did it.

We keep learning.” And networking with other environmental schools helps ensure “that we don't run out of ideas.

The awareness among the students is growing.”
