From 2024, Munich will test various disposal systems for plastic waste, including the yellow bin and the yellow sack.

Munich – Plastic waste in Munich should actually be disposed of at the recycling points, but not everyone can bring themselves to do so, and so the so-called lightweight packaging often ends up in household waste and is incinerated.

"We only collect 5.5 kilograms of plastic waste per capita and year, which puts us at the bottom of the list in Bavaria," says Julia Post, city councilor for the Greens.

But what is better?

How the people of Munich will be able to dispose of plastic and metal in the future will be decided in the years 2024 to 2026. Then the municipal waste management company (AWM) will test various systems: the yellow bin and the recycling bin in two pilot areas and the yellow bag.

The municipal committee approved the test.

"During the pilot test, different collection systems are to be scientifically examined for output, sorting purity, recycling rate and sustainability," says municipal officer Kristina Frank (CSU).

For example, the question needs to be clarified as to whether it makes sense for additional trucks to pick up more bins in front of each house, even though glass still has to be collected at the recycling points?

It is still unclear whether the yellow and recycling bins should be taken out of the basement right away or whether people should put them on the street.

It also has to be clarified where the sorting of the waste takes place.

On the one hand, the SPD and Volt city councilors advocate full service, since the bins should not be left on the street for a long time.

In addition, the waste should be separated close to the city so as not to produce unnecessary traffic.

"We urgently need improvements in the disposal of plastic and other packaging," says SPD Vice Kathrin Abele.
