The themes of the last day of the first scientific conference, “Prevention and management of hereditary diseases and disability,” organized by the Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Pediatric Associations, centered on echo-diagnosis of genetic diseases, in addition to metabolic diseases and heredity, at the Dama Rose Hotel in Damascus.

Genetic diseases arise from carrying the causative agent of the disease, with or without symptoms, and as a result of consanguineous marriage, according to what was explained by the consultant in chest diseases, Dr. Fatima Damirawi, who indicated that there are a number of genetic diseases in Syria due to the spread of the phenomenon of consanguineous marriage.

In a statement to SANA reporter, Dr. Damirawi pointed out the importance of conducting a study to detect the genetic causes of disease in children in order to take appropriate measures, indicating that the most common genetic problems that affect children are fibrous cystic disease, which causes respiratory infections, coughing, failure to thrive, diarrhea, cirrhosis of the liver and diabetes, in addition to Asthma cases can end in death.

The specialist in pediatrics, Dr. Sahar Idlibi, spoke during her lecture about congenital hyperplasia of the adrenal glands, which arises from a defect in the increase in male hormones in the female and the appearance of the male genital organs in her, stressing that staying away from consanguineous marriage and early diagnosis constitutes a greater opportunity to treat the disease.

In turn, the head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Association, Dr. Marwan Al-Halabi, stressed the importance of genetic diagnosis before implantation by conducting complete genetic studies to detect diseases, indicating that the test tube baby has become widely used for parents who carry genetic diseases to ensure the birth of healthy children with very high success rates.

It is noteworthy that the conference was launched yesterday in cooperation with the World Health Organizations, the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund, and aims to shed light on genetic diseases and how to prevent, treat and reduce their occurrence.
