Ukraine is a "human rights emergency," United Nations human rights chief Volker Turk declared on Friday.

"There are 17.7 million people who need humanitarian aid; 9.3 million need food and subsistence aid," Turk told a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland.

"They have about 7.4 million refugees, they have 6.5 million internally displaced persons."

Turk said the country is "suffering" not only from continued missile attacks, but also from the destruction of civilian infrastructure.

"The energy sector is very affected, the heating system, the electrical network, there are people who live in temperatures below zero, without heating and without electricity," he said.

"There are blackouts, so you can imagine millions of people suffering from it every day."

On Monday, Russia launched a new barrage of missiles into Ukraine, cutting off water and electricity supplies in some areas and killing at least one person in the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih and at least two people in Zaporizhia, according to local authorities. .

Blinken Says US 'Soon May Call' Sweden and Finland NATO Allies

By Hannah Ritchie

The United States "will soon be able to call" Sweden and Finland NATO allies, Secretary of State Antony Blinken declared Thursday after a meeting with his Swedish and Finnish counterparts, when asked about their admission to the defense alliance.

"I am convinced, based on everything I know, that soon we will be able to formally call both countries our allies ... Finland and Sweden are already integrating into our work," Blinken told reporters at the State Department.

"There can be no doubt on anyone's part that today they are ready to become members of the alliance."

Some background:

Finland and Sweden asked to join NATO earlier this year following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but have faced ratification delays from Turkey and Hungary.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄźan accused both countries of harboring members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party, also known as the PKK, which Turkey considers a terrorist organization.

ErdoÄźan has also called on Finland to publicly drop the arms embargo it imposed on Turkey in 2019 after it invaded northern Syria.

A step that Sweden – which had joined the embargo – took in September.

"Turkey has raised significant security concerns in this process, and the process is being used effectively and productively to address those concerns. I am not going to speak on behalf of any of my colleagues, other than to say that, as we have observed, it What both countries have done by engaging with Turkey and with NATO itself has been to tangibly address those concerns," Blinken said.

"And we have seen these countries take tangible steps to address again the concerns that Turkey has raised. So I am confident that this will continue."

NATO decisions are made by consensus, which means that the alliance's 30 member states must approve the accession of the two Nordic nations.

Turkey is the only member that has opposed its membership, while Hungary has yet to ratify it.
