The US Department of Justice has asked a federal judge to convict Donald Trump of contempt of court for refusing to comply with an order ordering him to turn over classified documents in his possession.
The information was published tonight (Friday) by the "Washington Post" newspaper, which quoted knowledgeable sources in the Ministry of Justice.
The judge, Beryl Howell, has yet to hold a hearing on the matter.
One of the reasons for the request is the refusal of Trump's defense team to appoint a representative to sign a document indicating that all classified materials have been handed over to the administration.
Trump's team's position is that such a demand is unreasonable.
The application documents remain confidential, and the Ministry of Justice declined to respond to questions on the matter.

Trump's lawyers recently said they searched four locations before Thanksgiving and discovered two classified documents.
These documents were handed over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, after which the lawyers announced that, according to their understanding, Trump fulfilled his obligation in accordance with the subpoena issued six months ago.
The American media quoted sources in the Ministry of Justice who believe that the searches were insufficient.
Trump's spokesman said in response to the words that his lawyers "continue to cooperate transparently with the investigation", which he called a "political witch hunt".
According to him, "Trump will continue to fight against the use of law enforcement as a political weapon, and will turn to legal channels to return to his possession the items that were illegally taken from his home, during the unconstitutional raid on his home."
