BRUSSELS -

"The H2Med project is going in the right direction. Hydrogen is a game changer for Europe. We will produce ten million tonnes of renewable hydrogen in the EU by 2030.

And we expect to import another 10 million tonnes. Hydrogen that will have to reach our industry".

This was stated by the

president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen,

in the joint declarations to the press in Alicante on the occasion of the agreement between Spain, Portugal and France on the new H2Med energy interconnector.

"The Iberian Peninsula is becoming an important European energy gateway to the world," she added.

"The EU will be part of this success story. We have always been by your side. We co-financed the interconnection of the Bay of Biscay.

We supported the crossing of the Trans-Pyrenees and the electricity interconnection between Spain and Portugal. A corridor for hydrogen through the peninsula can connect to the hydrogen supplies of the entire Mediterranean region. This is what we are working on", explained the president of the Commission.

“We are creating hydrogen partnerships with the Mediterranean countries. We already have one with Egypt, we are discussing with Morocco. And we are working on a wider Green Hydrogen Partnership, with all the southern Mediterranean countries. So this is just the beginning. But it's a very promising start,"

The H2Med interconnector "should be completed between now and 2030".

This was stated by French President Emmanuel Macron

in joint statements to the press in Alicante with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, his Portuguese counterpart Antonio Costa and the president of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

With the project "we want to achieve an ecological objective, an industrial innovation objective of the continent and the third which is that of strategic sovereignty in energy, for which it is necessary to diversify the sources", explained Macron, underlining the opportunity that "the project is of common interest and can be financed with European funds".
