The subject of French pupils' spelling skills is resurfacing in the public debate.
According to a study by the evaluation, forecasting and performance department, the average number of errors on the same dictation has almost doubled since 1987. Indeed, four generations of CM2 pupils have respectively been evaluated on one and the same dictation, in 1987, 2007, 2015 and 2021. Students today make an average of 19.4 mistakes compared to only 10.4 in 1987.
To respond to this emergency, the Minister of National Education is expected at the turn.
